Blue Lotus
(Nymphaea caerulea)
Blue lotus, native to Africa and Asia, is also known as Egyptian blue lotus, blue water lily, and sacred blue lily of the Nile. It had great importance in ancient Egypt where it was used medicinally, spiritually and recreationally.
The flower contains two psychoactive alkaloids: apomorphine and nuciferine. These compounds stimulate dopamine and serotonin receptors and are known to be euphoric and calming.
Blue lotus has been used as a euphoric, hallucinogenic, relaxant, sleep aid, aphrodisiac, for lucid dreaming, anti-aging, depression, stress, anxiety, menstrual cramps, erectile dysfunction and skin moisturizing. Traditionally served as tea, blue lotus is also now smoked or vaporized by some for stronger and more immediate effects.
